Edmund Silas Elkins was married to Paralee Estes in 1838 in Cannon County, Tennessee. They had 12 children. Edmund left his family in Tennessee and married Irene Melton in Anderson, Texas on June 8, 1858. Irene was also from Tennessee. They had four children, most of them born in Arkansas.

In some sources, Edmund's middle name is given as Samuel.

Alternative forms for his second wife's given name are Rena and Arena.
