William was born in Maryland (probably Baltimore) in 1797.[1][2][3] He spent much of his life in Frederick, Maryland.
William' s Find a Grave memorial conatins a biography written by Mike Hahn having these Gravesite Details, "age 72yrs.10mos.8dys." and an explanation of how these details have been preserved:[4]
In 1904 Michael A. Gruber copied inscription then remaining. Scharf also made transcription here. Thus, the present compiler, Jacob Mehrling Holdcraft, as published in Names In Stone, by incorporating information recorded by Scharf, and Gruber.
A marriage license for William Elkins and Mary Keefer was issued on 25 November 1819 in Frederick County, Maryland.[5]
William worked as a cooper, but late in life appears to have had trouble earning a living, as he was living in the Frederick County Almshouse in 1854[2] and is also there at the time of the 1860 census.[6]
