Henry was born in 1922. He was the son of Ernest Ellem and Rachel Baker. He enlisted in the A.I.F. age 17 years after convincing the authorities he was 21 years old. He and his brother Roy Ellem were in the same unit deployed to Greece and Crete. After the evacuation from Crete and the repatriation of his brother Roy back to Australia. His unit was reformed and sent to the Western Desert to defend against Rommel's offensive before the siege of Tobruk. In 1941 he was wounded in a shell burst while on night patrol and survived for nine days with limbs amputations and was buried in the Tobruk War Cemetery. [1]
