Robert Ellice (1784-1856) was the son of Alexander Ellice & his wife Ann née Russell. He married Eliza Courtney, illegitimate daughter of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, and Lady Georgiana Spencer, Duchess of Devonshire, on 10 December 1814 at Scarborough, Yorkshire, England.
Ensign on 8 November 1798.
Captain on 4 May 1801.
Major on 12 May 1808.
Lieutenant-Colonel on 16 March 1809.
He gained the rank of Colonel on 12 August 1819.
Major-General on 22 July 1830.
Lieutenant-General on 23 November 1841.
Colonel of the 24th Regiment of Foot (2nd Warwickshire) in 1842.
General on 20 June 1854.
He fought in the Capture of Buenos Aires.
