Originally, I used the Ellerton name as shown in the Lyon County, Kansas marriage record for her daughter Maggie. Considering the information generated with Vern Wilson below, I now believe that Ellington is the more accurate choice. (Feb. 2014)
See photos pg 1 & pg 2. Vern Wilson found the 1850 Census from Independence Township, Appanoose, Iowa with Mary E. Ellington, Aged 7 (Birth ~1843) BP listed as ILL. Mary is listed under the household of Dempsy * (*no Last name-although the transcribers show the last name SALIN, that surname was for the head of house in the above listed house #15. In house #16, head of house is Dempsy _______. This appears to be a mistake on the part of the census taker.) [1]
Dempsy's [39 /B~1811/BP Ill] wife is Clotilda [36/ B~1814/BP TENN]. We have a marriage record of Dempsy Stanley marrying Matilda Ellington in March 4, 1847. The Appanoose, Iowa marriage record lists Dempsy as 36 [B~1811] and Matilda as 32 [B~1815].
The persons listed in Dempsy and Clotilda's household are quite a confusing array of individuals. The puzzle pieces are falling into place and I will begin to assemble it into actual profiles here--March 2014. As of Nov. 2014, most of the children have been sorted out and I've started their profiles and added more details. I will eventually continue on that project.UPDATE: Sep 2019, These relationships have been confirmed and solidified. Many of these step and half siblings have been tracked and profiled here.
Genealogist Connie Lenzen supplied a copy of the original document on Nov. 2014. See the attached file (1858 Marriage #1). As she notes, "It poses as many questions as it answers." The doucument shows that the license was issued on October 1, 1858, but does not show a date of return or a date of marriage. It is unclear what the notes "Indexed" & "Rec 2" actually mean. It is great however to have another original document with at least Mary's maiden name Ellington spelled out so clearly!
UPDATE Sep. 2019: I've located a copy of the original record and attached it here (1858 Marriage #2). It shows the date (Oct 1, 1858) as correct and shows that Mary's step-father, Dempsey Standley-172, testified/gave permission-probably because of Mary's age. Note that on this record Mary's surname is spelled as ELINGTON.
See photos and see her husband's profile for additional information on this time period.
