Biography

Lorenzo engaged in the trade of blacksmithing.

Lorenzo C. Elliott was born in Pittsylvania VA, but later moved with his family to Middle Tennessee.

He married Martha E. Davidson before 1821 in Bedford County, Tennessee. (so far a marriage record has not been found).

The 1850 Bedford County census is his last census there in Tennessee. [1], for the family then moved to Bowie, Texas. Lorenzo and Martha, with their large family, are enumerated there in 1860. [2] His real estate value is $5000.00, and his personal estate value is $1500.00. Lorenzo is listed here as a 'farmer' for occupation; in Tennessee he was a blacksmith--a trade he had learned from his father.

Lorenzo died some time after this census. It is unknown where he is buried.

They had the following children:

i. Thomas ELLIOTT.
ii. Samuel ELLIOTT.
iii. Jane ELLIOTT.
iv. Sarah ELLIOTT.
v. Westley ELLIOTT.
vi. Cannon ELLIOTT.
vii. Isaac ELLIOTT.
viii. Virginia ELLIOTT.
ix Muse ELLIOTT.
x. California ELLIOTT.
xi. Andrew Harrison ELLIOTT

Bankruptcy

Interestingly, Lorenzo declared bankruptcy in 1843, about 7 years before he appeared in a Texas census. He and his family appeared in the Bedford, Tennessee census in 1850, then on Texas tax lists in September 1850, so they probably moved from Tennessee to Texas over the summer of 1850.

Transcript of bankruptcy notice:

"To the creditors of LORENZO C. ELLIOTT declared a bankrupt.

TAKE NOTICE, that a petition has been filed in the District Court of the United States for the District of Middle Tennessee by said Lorenzo C. Elliott, duly declared a bankrupt under the act of Congress, for a discharge and certificate thereof from all his debts, claims and engagements provable under said act; and that the 9th day of January, 1843, at the court-house in Nashville, in assigned for hearing of the same; when and where you may attend and show cause, if any you have, why the prayer of the said petitioner should not be granted. Attest,

JACOB McGAVOCK, Clerk of the Court of the Middle District of Tennessee Oct. 29, 1842" [3]

The Name Lorenzo

Lorenzo's unusual name--at least for middle Tennessee in this time period== is likely due to the era in which he was born, and the fact that the Elliott family were (by and large) Methodists.

The Original Lorenzo Dow
In this culture Methodism was not a casual thing to profess, and its adherents felt their religion deeply. There were several men of the Elliott family who were ministers who traveled and were called 'circuit riders'. One of the most famous Methodist itinerant ministers was named Lorenzo Dow.

Lorenzo Dow was considered eccentric but much beloved. Many young men from this era were named for him as a tribute--and perhaps a hope that their son might turn out to be like him--including (likely) the subject of this profile.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Lorenzo by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Lorenzo:

As a member of the US Black Heritage Project, I have added a list of the slaves owned by <insert name> on this profile with categories using the standards of the US Black Heritage Exchange Program. This helps us connect enslaved ancestors to their descendants. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.
11/17/2022 Imported GEDCOM data and edited bio to make sure nothing got messy. Added info to bio about Lorenzo's experience with bankruptcy. I have a painting which his descendant Ann Rottman says is him but I have no idea if that's accurate, so I haven't uploaded it yet. Let me know if I accidentally screwed up anything preexisting on this profile.
