The 4th Earl of Minto was Gilbert John Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound b=1891 d=1914 who was succeeded by Victor Gilbert Lariston Garnet Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound b=1914 d=1975.
Upon the death of his grandfather in 1859, Gilbert Elliot inherited the title of Lord Meglund. In 1867 he graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, England. After his marriage to Mary Grey in 1883, he accepted the position of military secretary to Lord Lansdowne, Governor General of Canada. After a few years in Canada, he returned to Britain and managed his family's estates.
In 1891 he became Earl of Minto and in 1898 he was appointed governor general of Canada.
