Biography

John was born in 1791 to father John Elliotson and mother, Elizabeth Emmett, in the parish of Southwark. [1] John Elliotson, M.D., was the eldest son of a respectable and wealthy druggist located in the High-street of Southwark. [2]

He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh from 1805-1810 followed by attending Jesus College, Cambridge (1810–1821) earning the degree of MD at both institutions. He subsequently practiced in London at St Thomas’ and Guy’s hospitals. In 1831 he was elected professor of the principles and practice of physic in London University (now University College London), and in 1834 he became a physician to University College Hospital. He was renowned for being the first physician to routinely use a stethoscope in the United Kindom. [3]. His specialty was in the field of phrenology and mesmerism and introduced the practice of acupuncture. He was a widely published medical author. He was also the personal physician of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, John Forster, William Charles MacReady, Harriet Martineau, and William Makepeace Thackeray. He interested Charles Dickens in Memerism, which resulted in Dickens deciding he had a flair for it and tried to use it to cure a woman friend of a nervous complaint. There appear no records of a marriage nor children associated with Dr. John Elliotson. Throughout his lifetime he continually met with disagreement from the medical establishment and eventually lost his positions in hospitals and career as a medical lecturer. He passed away in 1868 at the age of 76 due to 'natural decay', penniless and living with a close family friend.
