Biography

Benjamin Elliott was a son of Robert J Elliott. Benjamin was born probably in February, 1847, evidenced by his presence at age 3 in the 21 Sep 1850 dated U.S. census of the Robert Eliot household in AuSable, New York ^[1]. Likewise, he was counted at age 12 in 1860 ^[2].

The 1870 census is pivotal regarding his first marriage, which probably had occurred in 1869 ^[3]. In this record, Benjamin was age 23, and Angeline, age 22, both counted in the same household with Benjamin's father. Also in the household was a 7 month old infant, Benjamin Elliott (1869-1947). During the ensuing 10 years they had three additional children before Angeline's death in 1880.

In the 1892 New York State census, Benjamin was married to Elizabeth ^[4] (nee Beaupre, b. 1860 sister of his first wife), with whom he had several more children, these of whom are sufficiently documented:

• Wallace Henry Elliott (March 1882 – 1918)
• Elsia Elliott, b. March 1891
• John Clifford Elliott (18 November 1894 – 22 April 1962)
• Henrietta "Essa" Elliott (13 September 1896 – 13 October 1982); married Noah Philias Carte
• Frances Mariam Elliott (12 February 1906 – 22 January 1997)

Subsequent census records trace this family in Au Sable, then nearby Peru, New York ^[5],^[6],^[7].

The records illustrate that Benjamin Elliott was a blacksmith, following in the trade of his father.

Benjamin Elliott died 9 March 1926 at Peru, New York ^[8].

Notes

The records provide useful evidence that Benjamin's mother was from England, thus providing a trace to Elizabeth "Betsy" Rollins (b. 21 September 1806, Blakemore, Herefordshire), who immigrated to the U.S., and married Robert J. Elliott. The cited 1850 census identifies their first (known) child, Angeline, born about 1831.
