Biography

Sarah Doherty was the youngest sister of my great grandfather Joshua Elliott. She was the daughter of William Elliott and Nancy Kirkpatrick of Crosshill, Killead, County Antrim and was most likely born in Crosshill as that is where her parents lived from at least 1851 (they appear there in the 1851 census) until their deaths in the late 1890s/early 1900s. In all William and Nancy had five daughters (Jane, Eliza, Margaret, Anna, Sarah) and six sons (Joshua, James, William John, Thomas, Hugh Robert, David). Four of them (Jane, Eliza, James, Hugh Robert) emigrated to Australia, while the rest remained in Ireland[1].
Sarah was married twice, first to Thomas Henry in 1877 and then to Frederick Doherty in 1899. My great grandfather Joshua was one of the witnesses to the first marriage. Sarah had three children by Thomas Henry, two sons (James, Henry) and one daughter (Name unknown). She went on to have five children by Frederick Doherty, two sons (David, Joseph) and three daughters (Annie, Deborah, Ellen). Confusingly, all five of the Doherty children were recorded as being born before Frederick and Sarah married.

Maiden Name

According to the birth records of her daughters Annie and Deborah, Sarah's maiden name was Elliott[2].

Marriage 1

Thomas Henry, age 28, a bachelor, married Sarah Elliott, 22, a spinster on 22 Aug, 1877, in the parish church in the parish of Killead, County Antrim. The ceremony was Church of Ireland. He was a carpenter, resident of Ballycloughan, Killead. She was a resident of Crosshill, Killead. His father's name was James Henry, and he was also a carpenter. Her father's name was William Elliott, a farmer. The witnesses were Joshua Elliott, and Frederick W. Mervyn[3]

Marriage 2

Frederick Dogherty, of full age, a bachelor, married Sarah Henry, of full age, a widow on Jan 12, 1899, in Saint Catherine Church, Killead, County Antrim. The ceremony was Church of Ireland. His father was a labourer, named Anthony(?) Dogherty. Her father was William Elliott, a farmer[4]. Witnessed by George Beatty, Jeannie Cunningham.

Note that the ages of the children in the census below suggest Frederick and Sarah had children together for about 10 years before their marriage.
