William Anthony Elliot was born in Pittsylvania, Virginia on November 5, 1832. Son of James and Mary Coward Elliott, he was with his parents as the second oldest of nine siblings.
On May 6, 1855, William married Martha Worsham. In 1860 in southern Pittsylvania the couple is shown with newborn Elvira Elliott.
William would enlist in the CSA on June 8, 1861, and join the 38th Virginia Infantry, Company E. He was wounded during Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. He returned to duty in January of 1864.
William survived the war, and by 1880 in Pittsylvania, he and Martha had 7 more children. First child Elvira not present. A later record would show a ninth child, Charles, born in 1882.
