Biography

Evelyn Elliott Banker, age 95, passed away in Marion, Indiana, on December 18, 2014. She was born in Belmont, North Carolina, on December 7, 1919, the daughter of William James Elliott and Grace Ludwig Elliott. She graduated from Kannapolis High School in 1936, from Central Wesleyan College (now Southern Wesleyan University), Central, South Carolina in 1938, and from Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan University), Marion, Indiana in 1941, with degrees in English and education.

Her professional educational career showed a dedication to nurturing the education of students with a supportive, positive spirit. Her teaching career included Miltonvale Area School (Miltonvale, Kansas), Miltonvale Grade School (Miltonvale, Kansas) Central Elementary School (Central, South Carolina), Greenville Junior High School (Greenville, South Carolina, Matthews Elementary School (Matthews, Indiana), and J.C. Knight School (Jonesboro, Indiana). She was also Director of Daycare Services of First Wesleyan Church (Gastonia, North Carolina) and co-founder of Gastonia First Wesleyan Christian School (Gastonia, North Carolina).

Her associations included Delta Kappa Gamma and numerous church organizations.

Evelyn was married to E. Stanley Banker on July 5, 1941, with whom she shared over 73 years of marriage, and who will miss her profound loving spirit and support. She was the mother of two daughters, Judy McGraw of Wilmington, North Carolina and Linda Tittle (Tim) of Upland, Indiana and one son, J. Stanley Banker (Jennie) of Indianapolis, Indiana. In addition, she had eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her parents and brother, Ray Elliott, preceded her in death as did a granddaughter, Erin Lynn Tittle.
