Mary (Mamie) was born 10 November 1893. Her birth was registered in Stanley, Durham. [1] She was the eldest daughter of John Elliott and Alice Roscoe. Her family moved to Barlow, Durham when her father became the landlord of the Black Horse there. Residence 1901. Mamie and her brother John were staying with their maternal grandmother in Carlisle, Cumberland. In 1906 the family emigrated to New Zealand and they lived in Runanga on the West Coast. Her mother died in April 1912. Upon leaving school Mamie became a school teacher. In 1921 Mamie and her father returned to England for a visit. Whilst there she married her cousin Ralph Rice and remained in Birtley, Durham for the rest of her life. She died about May 1950. [2]
