Biography

Flag of Virginia
Ann was a Virginia colonist.

Ann Unknown was born about 1612, presumably in England.

On 7 July 1636, William Armestead was granted 450 acres, in Elizabeth City County, Virginia, southeast upon the land of Mr. Southell, northeast upon the land of John Branch, easterly upon the Creek, westerly into the woods, for the transportation … of nine persons. Nine persons are listed: Ann his wife, Rowland Owen, Rich. Clements, Robt. Glenister, Yorath Dane. Rich. Banks, Robt. Kendall, Andr. Strecher, Gilbert Guy.[1][2][3]

Ann therefore probably married William Armistead[4][5] between 1627 and 1634. William listing her as "Ann his wife"[1] stongly suggests they were married before they came to Virginia.

Children

Children:[5]

  1. William Armistead, b. c. 1638, no issue.
  2. John Armistead, b. 1640, d. 1688.
  3. Anthony Armistead (Capt.), b. 1645, d. 26 Oct 1726, Elizabeth City Co. VA.
  4. Frances Armistead, b. c. 1647, d. 25 May 1685; m. 1) Justinian Aylmer, 2) Anthony Elliott, 3) Christopher Wormeley.

Above are the only proven children of William and Anne. Others include the child below (without evidence, source is Ancestry Family Trees and U.S. and International Marriage Records):

Death and Legacy

On the "last of August" 1660 John Armistead, as executor for his brother, William Armistead, made power of attorney in York County, Virginia.[6]

Uncertain whether Ann was living at this time, or not. Assume she may have died at York County in Virginia.[citation needed]

Research Notes

Unknown Origin

Ann's birth date and place are unknown. Her parents and maiden name are also unknown.[4] She is called only "Anne" by William Crozier and also by Virginia Gardner.[7]

She may have been born as late as 1615 at England based on her estimated marriage date.

User-contributed online data bases assume she was baptized on 7 Feb 1608 at Wetherby, England (without evidence) or in 1610? at Giggleswick, Kirk Deighton, Yorkshire, England (without evidence) - and that her maiden name was Ellis (without evidence, source is U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900). Joseph Ellis and Nancy Masterson have been detached as parents.

William Armistead's land grant was for the transportation of 9 persons, including "Ann, his wife" so they must have been married before they came to America.

Thanks Kathy, I agree. Can you make those changes? Ideally, we would add a citation to the land patent itself or at least the index of it Cavaliers and Pioneers, if you have it. The JSTOR article may be a little ambigous about what exactly the patent says.

Added source with image to the land grant listing her as "Ann his wife". The grant is 3 years after they apparently arrived (per his biography) so we are not certain they were married before arrival, but it is likely they were married before arrival as he named her "Ann his wife." Otherwise she would have likely been listed with a maiden name and perhaps even others from her family.

Have changed last name at birth to Unknown. Note: U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 is made up of "family group sheets, pedigree charts, family history articles, queries, letters, Bible records, wills, and manuscript genealogies."

Sources like these may be fine as hints for further research, but are not appropriate for creating or editing pre-1700 profiles. Thanks!

Per question from 29 Jun 2015 - have created new profile for Ann Unknown - wife of William Armistead.

In preparation for the merge (or not): If we are sure this person (Ann Ellis) existed (appropriate source), then the marriage should be disconnected.

Or, if we are not sure she existed, then the parents should be disconnected, and this profile merged into Unknown-352599, as the wife of William Armistead.

Please let me know, if there are any questions or concerns. Thanks!

Ellis-1066 and Unknown-352599 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, birth date is a guess, same marriage and death. The important thing is that we do not know Ann's last name at birth so this merge will change her last name to Unknown. The merge is set up in the correct direction. Please do NOT reverse.

If you have questions, please ask. If in doubt, communicate, but do not reverse the merge. Thank you!

Ellis-6837 and Ellis-1066 appear to represent the same person because: Death date on Ellis-6837 is impossible and should not be retained. Otherwise, nothing conflicts.
Ellis-1066 and Ellis-6837 are not ready to be merged because: Death date needs to be corrected.
Her death date is apparently wrong, unless she lived to 116.
Ellis-6837 and Ellis-1066 appear to represent the same person because: Death date conflicts, but one is extremely unlikely. Otherwise, seem to represent the same person.
Ellis-7660 and Ellis-1066 appear to represent the same person because: Nothing except birth date conflicts, and I'd defer to the earlier profile.
