William was born about 1843. He is the son of James Ellis.
William Ellis gave his year of birth as 1841 in the 1881 and the 1891 census, and December 1840 in the US 1900 census. His gravestone gave his dates as 1843-1908. According to his death certificate, his age at death was 65 years, 5 months and 28 days, which translates to a date of birth of November 5, 1842.
In the PEI Marriage Registers, his marriage to Elizabeth Jane Cannon was recorded as William Ellis and Elizabeth Cameron, on 3 Jan 1866. The Church of England record added that he was from Lot 12, and Elizabeth from Lot 4. Witnesses were John and Charlotte Cameron. Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel Cannon and Sarah Wallace.

I was unable to find his baptism in Church of England St. Eleanor's records, although all of the other children were baptized in this church. Nor was he in the PEI Baptismal Index. There was a baptism recorded for this family that was crossed off, for a son named Henry born August 23 1840 or 1841, baptized 8 September 1844. This was an unusual delay, and if September 1844 is correct, the entry is out of order in the church records. The next son with this name was James Henry, born in 1846. It is my working theory that James and his first wife Jane had a son William, who died not long after James and Marianne's first son was born. The couple may have decided to re-name this son after his paternal grandfather.
