Eliza was born about 1826 in Exeter, Devon, England. On April 20th, 1849, she was charged with stealing clothing and fabric from her employer, Ann Handford, for whom she worked as a laundress.[1][2]
She was originally sentenced to 7 years imprisonment,[1] but the charge was later changed unlawfully to 7 years transportation. The error was discovered too late, and she was transported on the St Vincent,[2] arriving in Van Diemens Land on April 4th, 1850, where she went straight into service.[3] According to her indent records, she had a child on board with her when she was transported, a three year old named Sarah.[3]
She was granted a free pardon on July 30th, 1850,[4] and on June 24th, 1851, she married James Watt.[5]
Research Notes
Birth date estimated from age at transportation (age 25 in April 1850)[3] and reported age at death (age 73 in August 1901)[6]
