Biography

Dorothy Ellis was born on September 7, 1746, in Harwich, Massachusetts, her father John Ellis being age 35 and her mother Johannah Swift being 23 at the time. He had three siblings, John, Seth and Thankful Ellis. However when she was a very young girl her father John and 7 of her brothers went to sea together and her 7 siblings and father John were lost at sea. There is not much information on it however there is a letter written stating that they perished at sea. At that time Dorothy "Dolly" along with her Mother and siblings moved from Harwich to Sandwich, Massachuttes. At that point Johannah and family made a life for themselves and Dorothy met and married Jabez Crowell Gross on Oct. 24, 1763 in Truro, Massachuttes and there they had three children.

Dorothy and Jabez had 4 children: Crowell Gross 1765-1847 Alice Hill 1767-1843 Micah Gross 1780-1858 Freeman Gross 1788-1843
