Biography

This profile is part of the Ellis Name Study.

Ann was known as Annie.[1] She married at 21 on 17 November,1851 to Archibald Gray at St. Stephen's Anglican Church in Chester, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. [2]

She had three children: John Archibald Gray, Leander Austin Gray, and Allen David Gray between 1853 and 1856. [3] Since Allen lists his place of birth as Port Royal, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, it is possible that the family lived in that place for a period of time.

They will also have lived in New Ross, where their first son, John Archibald was born. [4]

An intriguing bit of information, which will have to remain nothing more than speculation for the moment was a scrap of added typescript on the copy of the Liverpool Transcript, June 14, 1866 that contained Ann's obituary. "In 1953 #118?? Frank Clifford Ellis says that his grandfather, Nathan Ellis left Beech Hills near Gold River, where the main families were the Ellis's and Grays, and it could be that Ann the widow of John A. Gray was Nathan's sister."

Ann died of a "congestion of the lungs". She was 35 years old and a widow, the daughter of Richard and Ann Ellis. She died 14 May, 1866 in Milton; this was reported to the Registrar of Historical Statistics by Nathan Ellis on 15 June, 1866. [5] She was at the home of her brother Nathan Ellis at the time. [6]
