Biography

Joseph was born to Joseph and Lydia (Lovell) Ellis in Medfield, Massachusetts on Nov. 23, 1691[1]

Joseph married 1st Elizabeth Partridge in Boston on 12 December 1716. Elizabeth died in Medway on January 14, 1718, nine days after the birth of their son Joseph. [2]

Joseph Ellis married 2nd Tamerson Adams, in Boston, on June 16, 1719. Documented in the record is their marriage by Mr. David Demming. [3] Joseph and Tamerson had, in Medway, nine children born between 1720 and 1741: [4]

19 Jun 1727 Joseph Ellis signed a petition on behalf of the inhabitants "asking for a division of Suffolk County and came before the House of Representatives." [5] No action was taken until the 26th of the following December when the House of Representatives granted the Petitioners power and instructed them "to bring in a bill for constituting the country towns into a separate county," but the Council refused to concur. Also signing the petition were: W. Dudley, John Chandler, Joseph Write, Thomas Tileston, Jonathan Ware, Samuel White, John Morse and John Brown.

Amidst boundary disputes and "disgruntled neighbors" on 11 Mar 1735 Medfield is "set off" to Medway. [6]

Joseph died and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, West Medway, Suffolk County (now Norfolk), Massachusetts Bay on Mar. 13 or 14, 1757. [7][8]

Note: In past iterations this profile has been confounded with one Joseph Ellis of Camden, New Jersey.

Geography: Medway, Massachusetts is about 17 miles southwest of Dedham. Medfield is about halfway between Medway and Dedham.
