Biography

This profile is part of the Ellis Name Study.

Edward was born on 18 November 1867 in Camberwell, London, England, the son of Alfred Ellis and Martha Bartlett.[1] Edward was baptised 28 February 1869 in Essex at St Mary Magdalene(Church of England) in East Ham.[2]

1871 Census[3]

The family were living at 257 St Georges Road, St. George, Camberwell, Surrey

  1. Alec Lee, Head, aged 31 born London, Middlesex
  2. Martha Lee, Wife, aged 31, born Chiddingstone, Kent
  3. Alfred Lee, Son, aged 5, born London, Middlesex
  4. Edward Lee, Son, aged 3, born London, Middlesex
  5. Martha S Lee, Daughter, aged 3 mths, born London, Middlesex

Edward is enrolled with his brother on 21 September 1874 to attend the Southampton Street School.[4]

Between the 1871 and 1881 English Census school records for the eldest 4 children indicate that Edwards parents move from 257 St Georges Rd to 245 St Georges Rd sometime between June 1975 and June 1976.

Edward was arrested and committed to the Gordon Road Workhouse on the 10th March 1880, and within a week he was discharged and “taken out by Pte 27 P.R” (PR might stand for “person responsible”) to the Mt Edgecombe Training facility.[5] [The week spent in Gordon Road would have given the authorities enough time to make arrangements for his acceptance to Mt Edgecombe. The stay in Gordon Road rather than a police cell suggests that he hadn’t done anything too drastic.]

His mother dies on 2 September 1880 at 245 St Georges Rd., her death is registered under the name of Martha Lee.[6]

1881 Census living on Industrial Training Ship and listed as a scholar.[7] Edward would have received training in some profession while on the Training Ship such as seamanship, tailoring, or shoemaking.[8]

It is thought that he may have come to Australia as early as 1888, as at the time of his death the papers said that he had been living in Australia for the past 25 years.[9] Perhaps he followed his eldest brother Alfred who immigrated to Australia on the Orient which sailed 23 June 1887.[10]

Edward was living in country Victoria working as a labourer when he married Ettie Schroder on the 13th January 1891, Gosford, New South Wales, Australia.[11]

Ted died on 2 December 1913 in Kyabram, Victoria, Australia in a tragic railway accident where he fell out of a railway van after falling asleep.[12] Edward was buried on the 2 December 1913 in Echuca Cemetery, Echuca, Victoria, Australia.

ResearchNotes

The nickname of Ted -

  • Based on a photograph held by a family descendant of his sister Kate [younger sister of both Edward and Martha] it is believed that he was known in family by the name “Ted”.
  • during the inquest for his death his friends who were at the scene and were called to give eyewitness testimony referred to him as "Ted".[13]

The use of the surname Lee by the family see Alfred Ellis (1839-1912) for further details

Possible baptism - Edwd, child of Alfred & Martha, was baptised on 28 February 1869 in Essex, England.[14] Still to be confirmed original not sited.
