Biography

This is a work in progress so help is appreciated. But, please don't erase anything without a conversation.

Several years ago all I had was her name, Sarah. Since then some documentation has appeared, census and marriage records, etc. The name Ellis came from an ancestry.com marriagerecord for Sarah and William Mott. Howeveer it is still quite possible she is part Native American. After all, Sarah was born at Jefferson County at a time when Native settlements were common and there were few Europeans around.

Sarah was born in 1822. She passed away in 1870. Sarah was married in Jefferson County, Florida in 1842 before Florida became a state. In fact, the Second Seminole War ended that same year which is why there were six forts located there in Jefferson County. The only settlers fort was Fort Welaunee (built 1838) on the Welaunee Plantation near Wacissa. Back in 1822 when Sarah was born there were zero forts in the area. Another point of curiosity is the military record of Sarah's son which describes him as having dark skin, straight black hair and black eyes. That had to come from a parent.

Research

Wikipedia: Waukeenah, Florida Once was a resting point for travelers using the Old Camino Real, the St. Augustine road, which started in St. Augustine and went to Pensacola, Florida. [6]

The Florida State Genealogical Society [7]

Jefferson County, Florida In the 17th century, the Franciscans administered five missions in the county along an east-west line near what would become U.S. Highway 27. These missions were destroyed at the beginning of the 18th century by the English governor of South Carolina in retaliation against Spanish depredations. When American settlers entered the county in the 19th century, the land was occupied not by the Apalachees, who had been dispersed when the missions were abandoned, but by Miccosukees, a branch of the Creeks who became part of the Seminole group. [8]

The Miccosukee Tribe [9]

Town of Miccosukee, Florida [10] At the time he visited on his voyage of destruction in 1818 (First Seminole War), "Andrew Jackson and his men were stunned by the sheer size of the Miccosukee town. Having been occupied since before the American Revolution, it was a town of long-standing permanence." Jackson burned over 300 homes before departing on April 5, 1818.[1]:91–92 Whites estimated there were up to 500 warriors, and "the town was the largest in Florida at the time".
