John was born about 1805. He was the son of William Ellis and Hannah Penrose. [1]
He emigrated from Devon with his parents, and like his father, was a ship carpenter. He entered into a relationship with Elizabeth Campbell, daughter of James Campbell; Nancy Campbell was born in 1825, daughter of Elizabeth Campbell single woman of Lot 13 by John Ellis of Lot 12. The next baptism was in 1829, for William, son of John Ellis and his wife Elizabeth Campbell. [2]
Children for John and Elizabeth were: Nancy Campbell (1825), William (about 1829), Henry (about 1831), Anna or Hannah Penrose (about 1833), James (abt. 1835), John Clark (abt. 1839), Edward C. (about 1843) and Elizabeth (1845). [3]
John Ellis was in the 1841 census in Lot 12 with a household of 9, all Church of England and all but one born on the Island. He was a ship carpenter. In addition to the older male and female, there were 5 males and 2 females under 16.
There were several households under the name John Ellis in the 1861 census, but he is probably the John Ellis, carpenter, in Lot 12 [4]. There were 7 in the household: one couple and 5 single people; a man and a woman between 45-60, 2 males and one female between 21-45, and one girl under 5.
Elizabeth died in 1865. [5] [6]
Their son James died two years later [7] and their youngest daughter Elizabeth in 1868. [8]
John was not in the 1881 census of Prince Edward Island, and his death was not recorded in the burial records of the Church of England in Port Hill or St. Eleanors. He could be the John Ellis of Lot 12 who died in September 1874, at age 68. [9]
The John Ellis who died in Charlottetown on 10 September 1872 at age 68, a native of Devon, England was late of St. John's Nfld. His widow Jane, born Newfoundland, was living in Charlottetown in the 1881 census with a large family, so it is not likely that this was the same John Ellis from Lot 12.
There was also the John Ellis born in England who married Flora McArthur on the Island and died in Massachusetts - although their years of birth match, he could not have married Flora before 1865.
There is also said to be a John Ellis who lived and died in Maine, with family who claims he is this John.
