Benjamin Ellis was born in Kent, England.

Early Years

Benjamin Ellis was born about 1828 and was baptised on 24 August 1828 at All Saints Church, Brenchley, Kent. He was the son of Thomas Ellis, labourer, and Charlotte Lockyer, living at Brenchley.^[1]

Benjamin was the fifth of six children born to Thomas and Charlotte:

• John Ellis, born and died 1820
• Maria Ellis, born 1821
• Eliza Ellis, born 1824
• Benjamin Ellis, born 1827
• Shadrach Ellis, born 1832

In the 1841 census of Brenchley, Kent, Benjamin was age 12 and living at Daw's Farm with his father, Thomas (45), mother, Charlotte (46), and siblings, Eliza (16), and Chadrah (8).^[2]

In the 1851 census of Tudely, Kent, a Benjamin Elles, born at Brenchley, Kent, abt. 1829, was recorded as working as Servant Ag Lab, living in the household of, and servant to, Thomas Ray, Balif. It seems likely that this was a misspelled surname and is likely to refer to this Benjamin Ellis (unconfirmed).^[3] Benjamin's parents continued to live at Leeds, Kent, with his brother Shadrach according to the 1851 census of Leeds, Kent.

First Marriage & Family

Benjamin married Jane Jenner, their marriage registered between Jul-Sep 1852 at Tunbridge Wells, Kent.^[4]

Benjamin and Jane had four children:

• Thomas Ellis, born 1856
• Esther Ellis, born 1858

In the 1861 census of Leeds, Kent, Benjamin was an Agricultural Labourer, age 34, living at Back Street with his wife, Jane (31), and children Emily (7), Thomas (5), and Hester (3).^[5] Benjamin's parents and brother, Shadrack, continued to live at Leeds, Kent, with his niece, Elizabeth Epps, also living in their household, according to the 1861 census of Leeds, Kent.

In the 1871 census of Lewisham, Kent, Benjamin was recorded as a labourer, age 44, living with his wife, Jane (41), and children, Thomas (14), and Esther (12).^[6] Benjamin's father, Thomas, died about 1871 and was buried on 11 April 1871.

On 7 November 1880 Benjamin's daughter, Esther, married George John Burgers at St. Stephen's, Lewisham, Kent.^[7]

In the 1881 census of Lewisham, Benjamin was recorded as a carman living at Maythorn Cottages with his wife, Jane, and their married daughter, Esther and her husband George Burgess who were staying as visitors.^[8]

In the 1891 census of Lewisham, Benjamin was recorded as a nurseryman, age 65, living at Porson Street with his wife Jane (62).^[9]

Benjamin's wife, Jane, died about 1894, her death registered between Oct-Dec 1894 at Lewisham, Kent.

Second Marriage

Benjamin married Ellen Adams on 10 Nov 1895 at Saint Paul, Deptford: Deptford High Street, Lewisham, England. Benjamin was age 67, Widower, Agricultural Labourer, his father recorded as Thomas Ellis (deceased), Agricultural Labourer. Ellen was age 55, Widow, her father James Drewett (deceased). Both were living at 29 Edward Street.^[10]

In the 1901 census of Lee, Lewisham, Kent, Benjamin (Ben) was age 75, Bricklayer, living at 23 Granville Road with his wife Ellen (61) and his stepdaughter Alice Adams (22), Dressmaker.^[11]

Death

Benjamin died about 1903, aged 77, with the death registered in the Lewisham Registration District between April-June 1903.^[12]
