Biography

Elihu Ellis was the son of James Ellis and Celia Woodsider (of Greenbrier later Kanawha Co, VA/WV.)

Based on a reading of her headstone, Elizabeth (or "Betsy") See was born on July 28, 1797 on the See farm in Kanawha Co, VA/WV. She was the 8th of 9 children. She married 1st) to William Alderson in 1813 at the age of 16 and by him had two daughters: Leah? (b. 1813 md cousin John C. See) and Julia Ann (b. 1818). Where or when her husband William died is not known but it was before Feb 1822, when she married Elihu Ellis in Wayne Co, IN.

Elizabeth had moved to Indiana (either before or after her first husband's death) to be near her parents and siblings, most of whom moved to Wayne then Henry Co, ca. 1818. Elihu Ellis was also originally from Kanawha Co also. In 1830, the couple bought 80 acres from the government in Henry Co, in the same neighborhood as Elizabeth's siblings and parents and is listed there in the 1830 census records with 7 children, including the two Alderson girls. The following year, the couple bought more land from Elizabeth's father, John See.

By 1840, the family had moved to Kosciusko Co, IN where they appear in the 1840 census. Elizabeth's nephew, Rev. Michael See (s/o Charles Frederick) states that Margaret Gerrad See, Elizabeth's mother, died in "Kosaosco [Kosciosko) Co, Indiana but doesn't give a year. The Ellises appear to be the only ones who lived in Kosciusko Co, thus Margaret See was probably living there when she died. A check on Henry Co and Kosciusko Co deed books may shed some light on exactly when the family lived there.

It is also interesting to note that David See, Elizabeth's brother had left Henry Co in 1832 for Grant Co, then is listed in the 1840 Wabash Co. Based on Eliza See's letter (above), both the Sees and Ellises may have lived in Grant Co. at one time. In 1848, Elihu purchased another 180 acres from the government, this time in Wabash Co, IN which is where the couple remained until their deaths.

Their headstones are in the Mississinewa Memorial Cemetery, Wabash, Wabash County, Indiana. Find A Grave Memorial# 35773054 for Elizabeth Alderson Ellis shows her birth: Jul. 28, 1797, Virginia and death: Mar. 18, 1870, based on her age at death. Find A Grave Memorial# 35773049 Elihew Ellis shows birth: 1800, Russell County, Virginia (undocumented. Ellis family was living in Greenbrier and Kanawha Counties); death: Dec. 28, 1868.
