Biography

Violet Winifred Ellis was born in 1885, her birth being registered at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in the 1st quarter of that year[1]. She was the daughter of Henry Ellis and Katherine Selina Thompson.

She was baptised on 11 February 1885 at Christ Church, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

In the 1901 England Census, Violet W Ellis (aged 16) was recorded living with her father Henry Ellis (61) at West Cliff Hall, Priory Road, Bournemouth. Also in the household was 42 year old Governess, Elizabeth E. Hughes.

At the age of 29 she married 43 year old Lt. Col. Charles Frederick Minchin on 23 November 1905 at All Saints' Church, Bournemouth, after Banns[2].

MINCHIN—ELLIS.—On the 23rd inst., at All Saints' Church, Bournemouth, Lieut.-Col. Charles Frederick Minchin, D.S.0., Indian Political Department, to Violet Winifred, daughter of Henry Ellis, of Charters House, Branksome Park, Bournemouth.[3]

They had one daughter: Mary Violet Ellis Minchin (b. 11 Jul 1908 in India)

Her husband Charles was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Indian Army.

Violet passed away at 32 Surrey Street, Norwich on 6 March 1936 at the age of 51 and was buried on 12 March 1936 at Branksome Park, Dorset[4].

Her Will was proved on 29 May 1936 at London to her widowed husband Charles Minchin D.S.O. Lt. Col. H.M. Army[5]. Effects: £18,750 9s. 5d.
