Biography

Jane was born in 1823. She passed away in 1870.

Not much is known of Jane between her husband Michael's death in Bathurst Gaol in January 1854 and the time of her death. She appears to have married Joseph Wigley in Bathurst in 1855. By the time of her death in 1870, she was living with her common law (?) "husband" Charles Trenauth in Sydney.

At the time of her death her children would have been 25, 22, 19 and 17.

Her son Michael Andrew Lenehan's obituary stated he was a native of Parramatta and had moved to the Macleay when he was 15 (c1860). Quite possibly the children may have been looked after by the extended Ellison family (Parramatta based) or Lenehan family (Hunters Hill based).

Jane died on the 8th of November 1870 at 161 York Street, Sydney of rheumatic fever, at the age of 47. The details on her death registration were provided by her common law husband Charles Trenauth. Charles was illiterate and signed the death registration with an "X".

She was buried on the 10th November 1870 at the Church of England Cemetery at Haslams Creek, now known as Rookwood.

For many years Jane's death date remained a mystery to her main researchers (myself and the late Lena Garrett). It was only upon discovery of a small In Memoriam notice placed in the newspaper by her brother George Ellison, that her death registration was able to be discovered.

DEATH NOTICE - Sydney Morning Herald - 23 November 1870

On the 8th instant, at her residence, 161, York-street, after a long and painful illness, JANE, the beloved wife of CHARLES TRENOUTH, and sister of Mr. George Ellison, of Parramatta, aged 46 years.
