Biography

Charles Elliston was born in Van Diemen's Land (1826-1856)

Charles was born in 1835 at Longford , Tasmania. He was the son of William Elliston and Margaret De Vaux. He was educated first at a private school and later at the Hobart High School, where he gained several prizes. In 1852 he was articled to Mr Robert William Nutt and at the end of 5 years passed his examinations. He was admitted to the Bar in the month of December 1857. However in January1858 he moved to Melbourne, Victoria to further his experience , and remained there for six years. He worked for the prestigous Law Firm of Bennett Taylor & Sandford ( Bennett was a Member of the Legislative Council in Victoria) It would appear that he met his future wife Lydia Compton, whilst working in Melbourn , and married her at St Stevens in Richmond 1863. Charles and Lydia had returned to Hobart, Tasmania by 1864 to start their large family. He then entered the Law firm of Mr Charles Butler as Managing Clerk for three years . In 1869 Charles joinedMr William Pitt in partnership, but this lasted only a short time until Mr Pitt retired. Two other partners followered over several years until in 1894 his eldest son joined him in partnership. He continued to practice Law in Hobart for the remainder of his life. He passed away suddenly at his residence Proctor Road , Hobart , 1908 .
