According to family lore Thomas B. Elmer remarried after Sarah C. Horton's death to another Sarah who was 24 years younger than he and she supposedly didn't like being around his sons and gave Ernest A. Elmer's wife a hard time as she was an immigrant. It is told that Thomas B. Elmer bought each of his sons a farm in the area of their chosing.

The 1900 Census has Thomas B. Elmer married to a Sarah Elmer age 53, and they had been married for 3 years, so there is some truth to this story.
