Biography

Dr. Nathaniel Elmer of Florida, NY. Born in Norwalk, CT 1732. Married Anne, sister of Judge William Thompson of Goshen, NY. He was a great grandson of Edward Elmer one of the original proprietors of Hartford, CT and a son of Deacon Jonathan Elmer of Sharon, CT.
He had come to Florida, NY with an elder brother, Rev. Jonathan Elmer, about 1732.
Nathaniel Elmer was a physician by profession, but, served as captain in a company from Florida NY under Col. John Hathorn. He continued as Surgeon of the militia until his death.
Died in December 1797 in New York City, when returning from a visit to Sharon, CT and was buried in St. Paul's Church yard. He witnessed the birth of a new nation.

SUPPLEMENTAL:
Dr. William Elmer was born at Florida, N. Y. Jan. 19, 1758, the son of Dr. Nathaniel Elmer. Married June 29, 1779 to Mary Allison daughter of General William Allison and died in Goshen, N. Y. May 24, 1816.
He entered the Revolutionary Army as a private at the age of 17 years, serving in the Fourth Regiment of Orange County Militia.
Afterward became a physician and settled at Goshen, N. Y. where his name was long held in loving remembrance.
He also served as surgeon of the Militia from 1787 until his death.

Dr. Nathaniel Elmer was a commissioned Captain of a company of the Florida and Warwick Regiment Feb 28 1776. This company was formed by dividing the regiment of which William Allison was a Colonel. Colonel Allison having command of the Goshen Regiment and Dr Nathaniel Elmer commander of the Florida Company as Captain.

Volume 1, Page 408: Dr. Nathaniel Elmer, youngest child of Deacon and Mary Elmer, was born February 17, 1733, in Windsor, and prepared for the practice of medicine. He settled before 1758 at Florida, New York, where he practiced many years, and died in December, 1797, in New York City and was buried in St. Paul's churchyard. He was captain of the Florida company of militia under Colonel Johathan Hawthorn of Warwick, in 1775, and served as surgeon of the state militia until his death. He married Anna, daughter of William Thompson, who settled in the southern part of Goshen, two miles from Florida, at a very early date. Children: 1. William, mentioned below. 2. Jesse, born June 11, 1764, married Sarah Minturn. 3. Samuel, died 1815. 4. Mary, died at age forty. 5. Asa, died young. 6. Temperance, married Judge Robert Armstrong. 7. Julia, married Richard Roe. 8. Nancy, married (first) John Smith, (second) Joshua Conkling; died at ninety years. 9. Nathaniel, M. D., died in his thirty-fourth year.
NOTE: There appears to be some inaccuracies in this book. The birth date is off and the birth place is wrong. All of their children were born in Florida, NY, indicating that Nathaniel is not one of their children. Elmore-505 13:58, 21 May 2016 (EDT)

Note N341Information from a web post by Susan Webb: They (Jonathan and Mary Elmer) were the parents of several children, among them was Dr. Nathaniel Elmer, a physician and Captain in the Florida Company in the Revolution. He was born 2-17-1733 in Windsor, CT, moved to Florida, NY in 1758, died 12-1797 in New York City. He is buried in the St. Paul Churchyard in NYC. He married Anna Thompson, who was born in 1733 in Fairfield, CT. They had several children, among them was Dr. Nathaniel Elmer who was born 1760 in Orange Co., NY and died in 1794, at age 34.
