When Joseph Howard Elmore was born in 1843 in Fort Madison, Iowa, his father, Joseph, was 45 and his mother, Emma, was 44. He married Sophia Anna McGlashen on November 12, 1865. They had one child during their marriage. He died in 1871 in Keokuk, Iowa, at the age of 28.
