Biography

Church of Ireland Clergy

Charles Richard Elrington was born in Dublin 27 March 1787 to Thomas Elrington and Charlotte Preston. At the age of 13 he was admitted to Trinity College, Dublin where he achieved at a high level academically including gaining the Bishop’s Law mathematical premium in 1805 and the primate’s Hebrew prize in 1806. He graduated with a B.A. in 1805, M.A. 1811, B.D. 1816 and D.D. in 1820. He was ordained a deacon in 1810 and admitted priest, at Dublin, in March, 1812.[1]

Charles became deputy Regius Professor of Divinity at Dublin University in 1827 and professor in 1829.[2]

He was collated as Prebendary of Edermine (Ferns and Leighlin) on 31 January1832. He resigned in about three months, and was made Chancellor. He was collated to the Chancellorship of Ferns on May 4th ; and was installed on May 13th. In 1840 he resigned, and became Rector of Loughgilly, in the diocese of Armagh. In September, 1841, he was appointed Rector of Armagh.

He was active in the Church Education Society of Ireland,[3] a body promoting and supporting parochial schools, until 1847 when he resigned his position. That same year he began the publication of the works of Archbishop James Ussher which included a biography published in 1848. This was not completed before his death with later volumes published by William Reeves D.D.

He died in 1850.

DEATH OF THE REV. DR. ELRINGTON. We regret to have to announce the intelligence which arrived in town this morning, that the Rev. Charles R. Elrington, D.D., regius professor of divinity in the University, died yesterday evening at his residence, Armagh.... [Details follow which state that he died from a severe attack of gout, from which he appeared to be recovering and then had a sudden relapse.]

Probably the most accurate biography is contained in the Introduction to The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments written by the editor of that work who was a contemporary of Charles Richard Elrington.
