Eli Elwell, son of Thomas and Mary (Engle) Elwell, was born on 12 Feb. 1827 in Howard, Knox County, Ohio.[1][2]
He married Mary Ann McKee, daughter of James and Elizabeth (Plaster) McKee, on 1 March 1849 at McDonough County, Illinois.[3][1][2]
He was a farmer when he and Mary appeared on the census of 9 Oct. 1850 at Vermont, Fulton County, Illinois.[4] He was a farmer when he and Mary appeared on the census of 7 June 1860 at New Salem Township, McDonough County, Illinois. His mother was living with them.[5]
Eli was killed on 30 Dec. 1862 during the Civil War at the battle of Stone River Tennessee.[2] His body was brought home to be buried at Foster Point Cemetery, Table Grove, McDonough County, Illinois. His memorial has biographical material and a link to that of Mary.[1]
