Biography

James Ely, second son of William Ely and Hannah Thompson, born in 1719 (or 11 Jan 1718), married Dorcas Andrews in 1741. He died May 12, 1766. Six of his sons served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.

Children of James Ely and Dorcas Andrews :

1. Elizabeth Ely, b. 1742, d. 1763, m. Alexander Alford.

2. James Ely, b. 1744, d. 1809, m. 1760 Catharine Hayes.

3. Ruhama, b. 1745 or 1747, d. Oct 1763. Listed on same tombstone as her father, James Ely, and her brother, Aaron Ely, buried in Ely Cemetery, Lyme CT. Inscription reads "Likewise of his daughter Ruhamah, who died in Oct. 1763, aged 16 years."[1]

4. Jacob Ely, b. 1748, d. 1836, m. in 1773 Temperance Tififany; m., 2nd, Lois (Beebe) Perkins.

5. Dorcas Ely, b. 15 Jan 1749 in Lyme, d. 1826, m. Eliphalet Alford.

6. Tabitha, b. 1751.

7. Aaron Ely, b. 1753, d. Jan. 5, 1777. Killed at Kingsbridge; buried at Lyme in same plot as his father and sister Ruhamah.

8. Andrew Ely, b. 05 Jan 1756 in Lyme, m. Hannah Perkins.

9. John Ely, b. Feb. 28, 1758 in Lyme, d. Aug. 14, 1847, m. Elizabeth Bennett.

10. Gad Ely, b. 24 May 1762 in Lyme, d. 1807, m. Tamar Meeker.

11. Rhoda, b. 1762. [2]

Burial in Ely Cemetery , Lyme, New London County, Connecticut, USA.
