Biography

Don or Duck was born in 1929. He grew up on his family's estate in suburban Philadelphia and at vacation homes in Brigantine, New Jersey and Northeast Harbor, Maine, and at Camp Tecumseh on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. He attended Meadowbrook, William Penn Charter and Hotchkiss Schools, and later Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He was a member of St. Elmo at Penn and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in November, 1949[1]. He interned at Abington and Pennsylvania Hospitals. He entered the United States Navy Medical Corps in 1946 as a Lieutenant, and was stationed as a psychiatrist as the Navy Retraining Command at the Navy Base at Portsmouth, New Hampshire[2]. He had many interests and his friends and family recognized him as a Renaissance Man. He was an accomplished athlete and competed in locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, and represented the United States in the first Pan American Games in Buenos Aires in 1951. One of his interests was mountain climbing. He was one of the youngest people ever elected to membership in the America Alpine Club, and his many ascents included Mount Owen and the Grand Teton in Wyoming; Mounts Assinibone, Louis Lefroy and Victoria in the Canadian Rockies; and the Alps, including the Matterhorn[3]. He married Barbie Mifflin in 1947 and they had three children. He died in 1957 at the age of 28 after a very short illness, and was buried at the Ely family burial ground at Solebury Friends Meeting, Solebury, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
