Roger was a member of the Company of Goldsmiths. He was first noted in their records in 1323. [1] He was one of the witnesses to the deed of sale for the site of the very first Goldsmith's Hall in London. [2]
In 1323 Roger de Ely was also Sheriff of London.[3]
Roger married twice. His first wife was Sybil, daughter of Geoffrey de Chaucombe. [4]They reputedly had three children:

He married secondly Alfreda de Appleby. She made her will in 1328 noting that her dwelling house was to be sold for pious purposes. She also paid for a the maintenance of a chantry in the church of S. Sepulchre without Neugate for the good of her soul and the souls of Roger de Ely, her husband, and others. Her will also named a son William (dec) and his widow Johanna.[5]
He died before 1328.
