Biography

Joshua is shown with the middle name of "Billiard" on Yate s Publishing. U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900, however no sources have been found to verify that he had this middle name.[1] for more information about this source. Joshua Ely married Mary Senior on the 29th day of 8th month of 1673 [this is a Quaker date and is NOT August 29,] 29 Oct 1673 at Skegby, Nottinghamshire, England[2]

"Joshua Ely, of Mansfield, married Mary Sinear, of Mansfield, at Geo. Cockerham's house at Skegby, 29-8-1673."[3]

"Joshua Ely with his family joined the West Jersey Colony sometime prior to 1685, at which date four hundred acres of the Ballifield plantation of his brother-in-law [Mahlon Stacy] were transferred to him for a consideration...." Joshua was late of Dunham, Nottinghamshire, so he had apparently moved from Mansfield and Skegby prior to coming to America.[4] (One merged file showed his arrival in 1684.[5]) According to Reuben Ely's Historical Narrative, there is no record of Joshua taking leave from the English Friends meeting or of his associating with the New Jersey Friends.[6] Joshua's first wife, Mary Senior, died in 1698, and he remarried to Rachel Lee on 9 Nov 1699,[7] in New Jersey.[8] He died prior to 16 Jun 1702,[9] at Trenton, Burlington, New Jersey.[10] His Will was dated 6 Nov 1700. The Inventory was taken "4th month 16 1702," and was proved on 1 April 1704.[11] In his Will, he mentions:

wife Rachel
two youngest children Benjamin and Ruth
daughter Elizabeth [not or age and not married in November 1700]
four sons Joshua, George, John and Hugh, daughter Sarah
Christan, daughter of Nathaniel Pettitt [George not to inherit if he married her]
cousin and friend Thomas Revell of Burington, New Jersey
