Biography

William Emerson was born in Boston, Massachusetts on 31 July 1801, and appeared in the Town Records as "the son of William Emerson and Ruth."

His birth was recorded in the copy register on the line before his more famous brother Ralph Waldo Emerson. This copy register collates the births alphabetically by decade and there are 6 children in total mentioned born to William and Ruth on the same page.. [1]

William married Susan W Haven on 3 December in New Hampshire when he was 32 years of age. His residence was given as New York, and Susan's residence was Portsmouth. [2] The surname Haven passed through subsequent generations as a given name.

In the 1855 census of the State of New York, William and his family were living in New York City, in a fine brick built residence of the value of $8000. William's profession was given as a lawyer and the family had three servants. [3]
