Rufus Emerson was born in 1780 in Portland, Cumberland, Massachusetts, son of Joseph Emerson (1756–1828) and Elizabeth Betsey Donnell (~1759–~1829).
His siblings were:
- William Emerson (1788–~1824)
- Eliza Emerson (~1791–1855)
Rufus died on April 12, 1859 in Maine, United States, aged 78.
