Biography

Joshua Emerson III was born in Methuen, Massachusetts Bay on July 19, 1745 and baptized on July 21, 1745. He was the son of Joshua Emerson and Sarah (Bailey, aka Bayley).[1] He lost his mother when only 11 or 12 years old. Perhaps this is why he named his first child Sarah - see below.

Joshua III married 1st Hannah Sanders on December 25, 1766, in Methuen, MA, Hannah being the younger sister of his step-mother Mary Sanders.[2] He married 2nd Hannah (Maxfield) Emerson of Salem, New Hampshire, with their intention filed on April 27, 1795 and marriage on May 5, 1795 in Salem, NH,[3][4] Second wife Hannah was born 17 Apr. 1748, the daughter of Samuel Maxfield, and widow of T. Webster Emerson.

Joshua and Hannah (Sanders) had the following children:

  1. Sarah, b. 21 Aug. 1767; m. Nathaniel Webster, 2 Apr. 1795; d. 6 Feb. 1824
  2. Simeon, b. 7 March 1770; m1. Patty Mitchell, 14 Apr. 1799; m2. Sarah Chase, 7 Mar. 1793; d. 21 Jan. 1830, and
  3. Hannah, b. 31 July 1775.

No known issue is evident from Joshua's 2nd marriage to Hannah (Maxfield) Emerson.

Like his brother-in-law Daniel Messer, Joshua enlisted February 14, 1775 and served in the Revolutionary War from 1775-1777.[5] Previously on 6 Oct. 1774, Joshua along with several other Methuen Citizens signed an engagement to support preparations for the possible war with Great Britain.[6] He was involved in a series of military engagements. He was Corporal in Davis's Company; in Col. Frye's regiment of Minute Men that marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775; was in service in October 1775; also in Capt. Whittier's company; and Col. Gage's regiment, which marched to join the northern Army from October 2, 1777, 40 days (Pope, p. 80).

Joshua was recorded in Methuen, MA on the 1790 census, living next door to his father.

Joshua's date and location of death are pending additional research.
