James was born about 7 April 1804. He was the third son of William Emerson and Sarah Arbuthnot.
He was educated at the Belfast Academy and Trinity College, Dublin, graduating LL.D. He travelled through Greece after which he published a Picture of Greece (1826), Letters from the Aegean (1829) and a History of Modern Greece (1830). He also wrote Belgium in 1840 (1841), Wine: its Duties and Taxation (1855), Sketches of the Natural History of Ceylon (1861) and The Wild Elephant and The Method Of Capturing It in Ceylon (1867).
James was called to the English bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1831.
He married Letitia Tennent on 24 June 1831 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. After his marriage he adopted the name Emerson-Tennent.
They had three children (two daughters and a son).
He entered parliament in 1832 as Member for Belfast (1832-37, 1838-45).
In 1845 he was knighted and appointed (5th) Colonial Secretary of Ceylon, where he remained until 1850.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society on 5 June 1862. James was created 1st Baronet of Tempo Manor in the Chapelry of Tempo in the County of Fermanagh on 14 February 1867.
He died in 1869 at the age of about 65. His son Sir William Emerson Tennent was an official in the Board of Trade. Upon his death in 1876 the Baronetcy became extinct.
