Joseph Emerson was born February 26, 1669, the son of Robert Emerson and Ann Grant of Haverhill, Massachusetts^{[1] [2]}

He was a Sergeant in the militia, a carpenter and millwright^[2]

On July 16, 1690, he married Martha Toothaker, daughter of Roger Toothaker and Mary Allen of Bellerica^{[3] [2] [4]}, and their children included;

1. Joseph, born December 28, 1691, who married Mary Hazeltine^[2]
2. Robert, born October 26, 1693, who married Abigail (Bond) Ordway^[2]
3. Mary, born March 21, 1696/7, who married Benjamin Kimball^[2]
4. Thomas, born July 19, 1699, who lived in Connecticut^[2]
5. David, born October 28, 1703, who married Hannah Webster^[2]
6. Daniel, born January 1, 1704, who married Elizabeth Hall^[2]
7. Hannah, born April 7, 1707, who married Thomas Dent^[2]
8. Ann, born May 1, 1709, who died in 1722^[2]
9. James, born October 20, 1712, who married Mary Webster and Sarah Merrill^[2]
10. Jabez, born August 7, 1716, who lived in Connecticut^[2]

Martha died 14 january 1725^[5], and Joseph remarried Hannah (Ross) Patten in 1726^[6]. She was the daughter of Thomas and Seeth (Holman) Ross, and the widow of Nathaniel Patten. No children were noted in these sources^[2]
