Biography

Volga German
Elisabeth (Emmert) Schmal is a Volga German.
Elisabeth (Emmert) Schmal has German Roots.

Katharina Elisabeth Emmert was born 06 February 1891 in Messer, Saratov, Russia, to Johann Heinrich and Amalia Emmert [1] and she is a descendant of Martin Emert, from Ausbach, Germany, and his wife Maria Dorothea. They were among the first settlers of Messer. [2] She is a descendant of Martin's son Jakob Emmert and his wife Maria Christina Ulrich who are listed as family Ms12 in the 1798 Messer census. [3] In 1798, Jakob and Maria Christina Emmert had three sons:

  • Johann Konrad Lorenz, born 1788
  • Johannes Emmert, born 1792
  • Heinrich Jakob Emmert, born 1795

Johann Konrad's surname appears to be Lorenz, making him Jakob Emmert's step-son. This means Maria Christina Ulrich was married first to a Mr. Lorenz and that Johann Konrad Lorenz is not a direct ancestor of Katharina Elisabeth Emmert, other than a half-uncle. This means Katharina Emmert was a descendant of either Johannes or Heinrich Jakob Emmert.

Direct descendant family records show that Katharina Elisabeth Emmert was Georg Heinrich Schmal's second wife: [4]

  • Louisa Groh, a Grimm resident, first wife, married 19 November 1903
  • Katharina Elisabeth Emmert, born in Messer, second wife, married 12 April 1911

First wife Louisa's death occurred 12 June 1909 and less than two years later he married Katharina Elisabeth.

Georg Heinrich and Katharina Elisabeth had five children:

  • Karl Schmal, born 20 February 1912
  • Wilhelmina "Mina" Schmal Root, born 21 March 1914
  • Alexander Schmal, born 04 March 1916, died about 1947
  • August Schmal, born 07 July 1918, died 1941
  • Heinrich Schmal, born 24 April 1921, died 21 February 1922

In addition, she was step-mother to Georg Heinrich's two surviving children with his first wife.

Georg Heinrich died 13 July 1921, when he was just 40 years of age. Because of the timing of his death, it was likely due to the severe famine that hit the Volga German villages that year. [5]

Katharina Elisabeth died 06 October 1978 in Tilischet, Russia, which was probably in the area of Kazakhstan, an area where Volga Germans were exiled to at the advent of World War II.
