Gregory was born about 1560.

He lived in the area of Swinefleet and Hook, near Goole, and had several property dealings there around 1600, including disposal of property in Goole, Swinefleet, and Hook 1597,[1] disposals of land in Hook 1602,[2] and purchase of property in Goole 1610 and disposal to son Bryan in 1616[3]

Research Notes

There is a marriage of Gregory Empson and Jane Simson (name of wife given here) on 16 May 1625.[5] Jane wife of Gregorie Empson of Swinefleet was buried at Howden on 7 March 1627/1628 (date given for the wife here).[6]

Jane may have been a second marriage, as she could not have been the mother of the four sons listed here. Alternatively, there was a younger Gregory Empson of Goole, son of Anthony, born about 1605, buried at York 1666[7] who may be a candidate for this marriage as he is of the right age and married at York in 1630, two years after Jane's death.[8]. Also another Gregory, brother of Thomas, is mentioned in fines for royalist support in 1647 - 1652 "Thos. Empson, Recusant, Goole, Co. York, Gregory, his Brother, and Wm. Empson, of London, his Nephew". Thomas is described as "very aged and infirm". These names are in several generations but they cannot be the sons of Bryan who only married in 1613, so probably from a generation before.[9]

Gregory's father is given as also Gregory, but if this is correct there was another Gregory Empson born 1565 in Goole, as the inquisition post mortem 29 July 1596 of Jane widow of William Empson who died 1 April 1589 in Goole gives his son and heir as Gregory Empson aged 24 years.[10]
