William was born on June 4, 1868 and was the son of Frank Engel and Magdalena Eis. He was born and grew up in Defiance County Ohio as a first generation American.[1][2][3]
Between 1900 and 1905 William married Matilda Clady, sister of his brother John Henrys wife, generally called Tilla. The two would have 3 children together; Emery, Berdella and Viola. They raised their family together in Richland Township.[4][5]
Williams life was cut short when he died on February 24, 1920 from the flu and an acute case of meningitis.[6] He was laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery with several other family members.[7] Tilla would outlive her husband by 49 years having never remarried.[8]
