Biography

Mary V. Engel, the third child of John Engel and Sophia Engel, was born in Harrisonville Precinct, Monroe County, Illinois on September 18, 1890. [1] (See Research Note #1 below)

In June 1900, Mamie was living with her parents, John (age 51) and Sophia (age 42), in Harrisonville Precinct, Monroe County, Illinois. Although the record does not explicitly say so, it does seem to indicate that John was a farmer, as a farm schedule line number was appended. Also in the home were three sisters: Katie, Lena, and Anna; the three older children were attending school. It seems that there had been one other child that was born and died prior to that date. [2] (See Research Note #3 below for full details)

September 10, 1915 The Waterloo (IL) Times reported that "Miss Mamie Engel of near Harrisonville called on friends here Wednesday of last week." [3]

December 10, 1915 The Waterloo (IL) Times reported that "Miss Mamie Engel spent Friday [in Madonnaville] with her sister Mrs. Tonie Wierschem." [4]

Mary married Joseph Koch after June 1917. (See Research Note #2 below)
Their children included

  • Victor Koch (1919-2014), married Katherine Kirchner 1948, had issue
  • Raymond Koch (1921-1954), married Dorothy Goodman, had no issue
  • Steven Koch Sr. (1922-2006), married Unknown, married Dorothy Ruby
  • Clementina Koch (1926-2010), married Marcellus Floerke 1952, had issue

October 28, 1928 The Waterloo (IL) Times reported that Valmeyer [IL] residents Mrs. John Engel, daughter Mrs. Jos. [Marie] Koch, and her daughter Clementina visited Waterloo [IL] the previous Friday. [5]

Mary died at an unknown age. It is not yet known where she was buried.
