"His life came to an unexpected end. Three men were riding horse-back between Elizabethtown and Mt. Joy. The one was not known, the second was a Mr. Erb, the third was Hans. They came to a place where workmen were blasting rocks to make a tunnel. They halted to wait for the explosion. Hans was between the other riders. A stone from the blast fell on Hans' head, crushing it and scattering the contents upon the ground. Mr. Erb gathered the contents and took the body home. The body was interred in the homestead cemetery." (Taken from History Old Order River Brethren, by Laban T. Breckbill, 1972, p.12.)
"The second son [of Ulrich & Anna Engle], HANS, in 1770 purchased a farm up-creek from Stackstown on what is known as the Guy 'Sonny' Hoffman farm, now owned by Jay Frey. In 1773, Hans purchased the Patrick Campbell farm of 220 acres from Campbell's widow. This is now known as the Nissley Vineyard farm. In 1786, Hans sold the first tract to his younger brother Yokeli. Hans' wife, ELIZABETH SCHOCK, was an older sister to Yokeli's wife, Veronica Schock. Thus, by 1786, 340 acres surrounding Stackstown, extending from the Bossler road to near the Susquehanna River along the Conoy Creek, were in the possession of the two Engle brothers." (Written by John H. Engle; taken from Through the Windows of Wickersham, by Mrs. Paul Hiestand, 1986, p.3.)
Children of Hans Engel and Elizabeth Schock are:
i. Anna Engle, born 1771; died 1843; married John Heisey
24 ii. Jacob Schock Engle, born July 9, 1773; died January 24, 1841; married Magdalena (Martha) Strickler Abt. 1800.
iii. John Schock Engel, born 1775; died 1836; married Esther Long; born 1780; died 1836.
Notes for John Schock Engel:
"An accident in Hans Engel's later life which resulted in his death was that while he was taking care of the team at the barn during the workmen's dinner hour he accidentally fell beneath the horses and was killed." (Taken from History of the Engle Family in America 1754-1927, by Morris M. Engle, p.33.)
iv. Elizabeth Engle, born 1775; died 1847; married John Gish
v. Veronica (Fanny) Engle, born 1779; died 1846; married John Hoffman
