Biography

Joseph was Cherokee.

Joseph England was born in the Cherokee Nation in 1823. He was the son of William England and Susannah Ward. William signed up his family to emigrate to Indian Territory on January 19, 1834. He stated there were ten in the family. William, Susannah, and one of their children died en route in Arkansas. [1] Four of Susannah's siblings and their families were in the same detachment, and Joseph and his remaining siblings continued to Indian Territory with them. Joseph married Sabra Cooper, also Cherokee, about 1844. They were the parents of Susanna, William (Cornelius), Benjamin, Sabra,[2] Louisa, Sally, and Joe. [3] Sabra died in 1857 and he married Martha Adams about 1859; they were the parents of Martha and Mary. Wife Martha died in 1867. [4] Joseph married Mary Brown in 1874; they were the parents of one child, Viola. [5] Joseph died in 1894 and is buried at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Ottawa, Oklahoma. [6]
