Recollections

According to his son, William George English, his father, Robert John English was born on his father's farm in Magherasaul, County Down, Northern Ireland, near Lurgan. He came to America aprox. 1880 where he worked on the Christy Estate in New York. In a letter dated 7 Apr 1982, Harriet English states, "Papa's [WGE] father was born August 23rd [...] He thinks his grandfather was also "Robert John". He doesn't know his uncle's other name. Yes it was the Christy estate--father [RJE] was all things there--collected rents, raised chickens, grew everything, including orchids. Salary for twenty years, without a raise, was $55.00 a month and a five dollar gold piece for Christmas. Which is why he left for a position on a larger place in the Cleveland area--that paid two hundred a month. They moved there in 1916." ^[6]

Robert John English's father, Robert John English, worked on Lord Lurgan's estate in Ireland. This is where RJE learned about horticulture, a tradition that has passed down the lines to this day.
