Funeral services held for Mrs. Catherine Bertrand from the Holy Family Catholic Church, Rev. Owen Bennett officiating at a requiem high mass.
Mrs. Bertrand was formerly Catherine Ennis and was born 6/22/1853 at Oakville, Ontario.
In October 1879, she was united in marriage to John Bertrand at Perry Sound, Ontario. They came to L'Anse in 1887 and settled on a homestead. At that time they were one of the few homesteaders in that section of the country. The Ontonagon Road was a more trail passing in front of their house.
In 1904 they moved to Ontonagon and Mrs. Bertrand has made her home here since.
One son, John Bertrand of Ontonagon & 4 daughters, Mrs. Ellen Miles - Ontonagon, Mrs. Edward Molaski - White Pine, Mrs. W. Arnold - Dayton, Ohio and Mrs. Malina Deck - Lexington, Ky, survives her.
Mr. Bertrand preceded her in death in 1909. She also leaves 3 sisters, Mrs. Fannie Foals - Duluth, Mrs. John Have - Vancouver & Mrs. Cecile Teadell - Los Angeles, Cal., & 2 brothers, James & Frank Ennis - both of New West Minster Vancouver.
Mrs. Bertrand was a member of the Lady Macabees of Ontonagon. She was stricken with a paralysis stroke about 1 month ago & has been failing rapidly until her death, Dec. 31, 1928. Mrs. Bertrand was a very cheerful woman & held in very high esteem in the community.
Burial at Holy Family Catholic Church. Pallbearers were William Krohn, Lyle Ross, Archie Hall, George Gauthier Sr., John Miles, Jr. & William Marley.
