Biography

This profile is part of the Ennis Name Study.

Joseph was born in 1751 at Sussex County, New Jersey to William (Ennis) Ennes Jr. and Elizabeth (Quick) Ennes. His exact date of birth is found in the Old Ennis Bible, written by his father; "1751 July 9th is born my third son Joseph."[1]

Joseph was baptized on August 18, 1751 at the central Reformed Church at Machackemeck (Deerpark), Orange County New York, recorded as the child of William Ennes and Elisabeth Quick. Sponsors were Joseph Westbroeck and Elisabeth Kuykendal, his wife.[2][3]

The Genealogy of the Quick Family in America lists his birth family as Elizabeth Quick, bap. 28, Jan 1722, m 19 June 1745 to William Ennes, both rec'd as members R.D. Ch. 19 June 1745; and their 8 children: Cornelia Ennes bap 7 June 1741, Benjamin Ennes bap 3 May 1743, Daniel Ennes bap 8 Dec 1745, Margriet Ennes bap 17 July 1748, Joseph Ennes bap 18 Aug 1751, John Ennes bap 24 Mar 1754, Cornelis Ennes bap 19 June 1757, Alexander Ennes bap 19 Aug 1759.[4]

On June 22, 1770, Joseph Ennes married Grietje Van Etten. The Reverend Thomas Romeyn officiated. The marriage was recorded at the Reformed Church at Machackemeck (;ater Deerpark), Orange County, New York,[5][6] Grietje was baptized on November 5, 1752 by her parents; Johannis Van Etten and Marrietje (Harriet) Westmeal.[7]

Their children are:

  1. Elizabeth Ennis, b. 10 Feb 1773. bp. 10 Feb 1773.[8]
  2. Wilhelmus bp. 6-14-1775; Wilhelmus married in 1793, his cousin, Marie (Ennes), daughter of Benjamin, who was killed at Raymondskill Creek in the Battle of Conneshaugh in April 1780
  3. John Ennis, bp. 24 Jan 1779.[9]
  4. Joseph Ennis, b. 8 June 1786. bp. 1-2-1786.[10]
  5. Catherine (Ennis) Van Etten, b. 27 May 1791. bp. 17 July 1791.[11]
  6. Daniel b. 9-21-1788. bp. 10-12-1788.[12][13]

Joseph and Grietje were both listed in 1787 as active Reformed Dutch Church members.[14] Joseph was a Deacon, then an Elder at the Minisink Valley Reformed Dutch Church.[15]

Excerpts from "A Bit About the Ennes".[16] "JOSEPH ENNES, born 1751, son of William and Elizabeth Quick, married 6-22-1770, GRIETJE VAN ETTEN, who was baptized, daughter of Johannis Van Etten and Marrietje (Harriet) Westmeal. Joseph was prosperous. He ran a ferry across the Delaware River at Dingsman Landing. It is said that he aided two of his sons who migrated to New York in 1806 and settled in the vicinity of Alloway, New York. He sent them money and visited them about 1819... Joseph Ennes (III) and Grietje' children were: Elizabeth bp. 2-10-1773; Wilhelmus bp. 6-14-1775; Johannis J. bp. 1-24-1779; Joseph bp. 1-2-1786; Catrina b. 5-27-1791; and Daniel b. 9-21-1788 and bp. 10-12-1788. (taken from Machackameck Church records) Wilhelmus married in 1793, his cousin, Marie (Ennes), daughter of Benjamin, who was killed at Raymondskill Creek in the Battle of Conneshaugh in April 1780.

Joseph Ennes died around 1830 at Sussex County, New Jersey.[17]

Research Notes

The Joseph Innis recorded in the 1830 U.S. Census at Deerpark, Orange County, New York, must be a different man. He was recorded as a solo householder age 20 to 29.[18]

In the list of children in the biography, it shows Joseph (Jr.) born on 08 June 1786 and baptized on 1-2-1786. However, the source given says that 08 June 1786 was the christening date, not the birth date.

Followup: I found a source which says William and Benjamin were brothers: This source (LANDMARKS OF WAYNE COUNTY NEW YORK

History of the town and village of Lyons. Page 288) apparently states that: William and Benjamin Ennis, brothers migrated hither from New Jersey in 1806. The former died about 1822. His son Robert was a canal contractor and in 1847 purchased the homestead and saw mill of Capt Henry Towar at Alloway, and died in 1860. Benjamin Ennis went to Ohio in 1832 and died there.

Hello, I just created a wikitree profile for Benjamin Ennis (b. ca. 1783; died 1851 in Ohio). I attached him as a son of Margarita Van Etten, but I couldn't connect him to this profile because it is Project Protected. Benjamin seems to be the Benjamin Ennes (age 40-50 in the 1830 Census, Lyons, Wayne Co., New York) and presumably a brother of William who died there in 1823 (listed as a son of Joseph above). Or am I missing something and Benjamin and William were just cousins?

Earlier today I changed this man's LNAB from Ennis to Ennes. See the earlier profile history at https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:NetworkFeed&who=Ennis-9

Ennis-654 and Ennis-9 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents; same spouse; same dates.
